Department of British and American Studies Image English is the global language and the key to a closer understanding of the world.
A knowledge of English will open the door to infinite possibilities.

Imagine how exciting your future life would be, and how broad your horizons would become, if you were able to communicate with English speakers in their native language. We now live in a society without borders. People, things and information travel around the world and across borders at a dizzying pace. There is no disputing the fact that more people in this global milieu communicate in and understand English than those who use any other language. A knowledge of English is indispensable in a wide range of fields and occupations, as English has become the common language of international institutions, the lingua franca of commerce and the main language of communication in the areas of science and technology. Modern society has a ceaseless need for those with a good command of the English language. Everything you will need for mastering English is condensed into the four-year program at the Department of British and American Studies.

Thorough training designed to allow you to use English freely even in formal situations. Enter upon the path to becoming a global citizen well-versed in world culture and society, especially those of the English-speaking countries.

The opening moves in your first year will consist of fundamental practice in the English language, while your second year will also be comprised of training in English that will form the basis for all of your future studies. During this period of time, the PUT (Power Up Tutorial), a class with an extremely small number of students, will contribute greatly towards increasing your language skills. These PUT classes are centered upon discussions held by teaming one native English-speaking instructor with three students. Furthermore, your class advisor will also provide additional, indispensable support. Your advisor will draw up a gpatient's chart,h prepared after repeated one-on-one student interviews, in order to pinpoint how well you understand the material, where you've made improvements and where you're having trouble. All teaching faculty will then use these charts to compose classes based upon skill levels, and to offer even more finely-tuned instruction and guidance. Not only this, but students in the Department of British and American Studies take five free TOEIC tests across their four years of study; both students and teachers alike use the transition of these test scores to determine students' areas of difficulty and proficiency. All of these results are then put to use in further enhancing English education.

We at the Department of British and American Studies aim to provide you with the ability to speak English gracefully, such that you will be able to speak in any setting without embarrassment. Our final goal is not only to enable you to read, write, speak and listen to English without difficulty, but furthermore to instill in you a true linguistic ability which ties in an understanding of the cultures, social backgrounds, thought processes and sense of values of the English-speaking countries. It is for this reason that we have put into place a wide-ranging curriculum which covers multiple facets of countries where English is spoken, such as social studies, economics, geography and culture. In particular, students entering into their third year of the program take seminar courses where they deepen their research activities in fields in which they are interested.

Graduates who complete their studies and strike out on their own in the real world are capable of standing on an even footing with those from other linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and are active in a wide variety of different fields including the airline industry, the travel industry, transportation, distribution, manufacturing, finance, the service industry and education.
