Department of French Studies
Department of French Studies French, known as the most beautiful language in the world, is also an official language at the UN, the EU, the IOC, FIFA and other institutions

France is a leading EU nation and the home of fashion, the arts and gastronomical culture, a country with an enormous influence even on the international stage. French, the national language of France, is a major language at a wide variety of international institutions, including the UN. It goes without saying that, when one has taken the entirety of the world into their scope, those who have a command of both French and English will be of inestimable value. In this department, not only will students learn French while gaining deep, broad knowledge about wider Europe as a whole, they will also be able to study English as a minor language at the same level as subjects taught as part of English major courses. We at the Department of French Studies cultivate highly refined and educated world citizens.

Listening, speaking, reading, writing and thinking---become able to use French in the real world

Unlike English, almost all students in our department encounter French for the first time when their studies at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies begin. The most important part of the first year of study is growing accustomed to French while overcoming your fear of using a new language. For example, a Japanese instructor will conduct Basic French lessons by explaining grammatical points in an easy-to-understand manner, while a native French teacher will carry out Practical French classes conducted in French. Repeating this process will enable you to gain a knowledge of French.

Power Up Tutorials (PUT), which are classes with a very limited number of students, begin from the second year of study, in which students develop practical conversational skills through imagining themselves in a variety of different settings, such as at restaurants and boutiques. Instruction will focus on allowing you to reach a level at which you are able to use French to convey your own thoughts and ideas. Advanced PUT classes, which feature more advanced content than second-year PUT classes, begin from the third year of study. These classes enable students to work on their practical speaking skills. Furthermore, in order to enhance students' ability to function in the real world, classes are also carried out on the subjects of tourism and business in addition to the French language. Students will continue to develop their skills so as to be able to use French to write theses, hold discussions and give presentations.

At this point in the program, students begin to think about studying abroad. The primary effect of a study abroad program is increased self-confidence. In addition, coming into contact with other cultures increases students' awareness of social problems. A great number of students who study abroad come back to Japan and begin to write graduation theses with deep thoughtfulness, spotlighting immigration issues, religion, economics and other topics. These students display a remarkable improvement in writing and composition.

After achieving such a solid store of abilities, graduating students go on to work in a broad range of fields, including seeking employment at companies with branch offices in France, working at trading companies with European clients or finding work at hotels where they are able to welcome guests from abroad.
