The joy of rediscovering the language and culture of Japan, which people the world over now seek to understand
Modern Japan could not survive without the cooperation of people from around the world. Today, more and more people in other countries are becoming interested in modern Japanese culture, such as cartoons and video games, and are also studying Japanese-a language which proves useful to them in their daily lives. As you return to studying Japanese culture and history in order to respond to the desires of foreigners to learn about Japan, you will be amazed at the depth and variety of all that is Japan. You will find a renewed sense of where we in modern Japan came from, and of what our true identity is. Before going out to encounter foreign cultures, it is best to first know who you, yourself, are, and to develop your ability to properly explain Japan and the Japanese language.
Become a Japanese expert, now so in demand throughout society
Most of the problems which afflict modern society are, at their root, caused by a lack of mutual understanding between people. Even more than a command of specialized knowledge, those who have a solid grasp of the Japanese language are highly prized in industry, in the local community and even in individual households. And, understanding a foreign culture is one method for arriving at a deeper and more objective understanding of Japanese. In our department, the study of English is used as a means towards enhancing communication skills, in which way we educate our students in the skills necessary to enable them to teach the Japanese language to foreign learners.
Building up both Japanese and English language skills by viewing these languages as "two among many languages of the world"
At the Department of Japanese Studies, Japanese is viewed not as the national language, but rather objectively, as just one of many languages throughout the world. The study of English, which is a minor requirement while studying Japanese, is also intended to serve as a mirror in which to view Japanese objectively. Thorough training in practical Japanese usage is carried out amidst classes with very small numbers of students.
After four years in our program, graduates strike out on their own armed with a vast store of communication ability. More specifically, our graduates have the capacity to deepen their understanding while maintaining a firm grasp on problems and issues facing both Japan and the entire world. An ability to see the world from others' points of view, an ability to logically arrange information and ideas, an ability to express themselves in clear, concise and beautiful language (both written and oral), an ability to adapt flexibly to any situation, an ability to speak clearly while looking the other person squarely in the eye, an ability to hold debates with a crowd of people, an ability to interview those whom one has met for the first time, and an ability to stand on stage and give presentations in front of others-this is the well-defined set of abilities with which we wish to endue our students.
Also, in an attempt to position English as a required minor course, another special feature of our department is thorough guidance in English language by native English speakers, enabling students to study English on a level equivalent with that of specialized English-language courses.
Our graduates are fluent in both English and Japanese, and go on to employment in a wide variety of fields, including corporate management, sales promotion, marketing, international departments, educational institutions and foreign investment firms.s
