1. Objectives
The
objective of the
J Program is to provide students with
challenging Japanese language and cultural instruction,
equipping them with the skills and motivation necessary
to the pursuit of their academic goals. The main focus
is on the mastery of the Japanese language.
2. Courses Offered
Japanese Language Course
(required)
The
Japanese Language Course is designed for a
two-semester academic year. Each semester consists
of two quarters (seven weeks each in the Spring
Semester, 14 credits; six weeks each in the Fall
Semester, 12 credits). Classes meet for 3-4 hours
each morning, five days a week, or approximately 440
hours for one year of study. Students continuing on
from Fall to Spring Semester will also take a
two-credit language course during January.

Japanese Studies Courses (electives)
The Japanese Studies Courses, taught in English (or other
languages as necessary), are
also offered as regular General Education courses in the undergraduate program
of Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. J Program students take these
courses together with undergraduate Japanese
students who take them as elective courses. The areas of study include
History, Culture, Society, Economics, Business, Education, etc. Please

for further information. Each Japanese Studies Course meets two hours per
week for fifteen weeks per semester, and carries two credits.
Japanese Culture Workshops (elective)
The Japanese Culture Workshops aim not only to provide
hands-on experience of traditional Japan's arts, such as calligraphy, flower
arrangement, and ceramics, but to introduce both contemporary and
traditional aspects of Japan through visits to places of cultural
interest. The classes are conducted in various styles: some are
lecture oriented, others are practice based. For further information,

These workshops carry one credit per semester.
3. Minimum Requirements for a One-Year Certificate
of Completion To be awarded a one-year
certificate of completion, students are required to
obtain a total of thirty credits, including at least
twenty-eight credits from the Japanese Language Course.
