Department of English and Contemporary Society
Department of English and Contemporary Society Learn specialized English language skills now so highly in demand in employment fields. This is the starting point leading to advanced English ability.

To be recognized in today's society as someone with English ability, you must be able to seek out problem points on your own, gather information and expand your knowledge towards solving those problems, and then express your findings in English. In other words, you won't be thought to have real ability if you just passively accept tasks assigned to you by others, without taking any initiative of your own accord. The pace of globalization is constantly accelerating, and the demand for English is growing concomitantly in every arena. In particular, the future will demand even more capable personnel in the five fields of tourism and hospitality, international exchange and volunteering, journalism and mass media, translating and interpreting, and English education for children. It is also in the sense of further developing your abilities that expectation is now focused on cultivating your sense of self-reliance and engaging in studies which tie in with an advanced level of English language skills.

Enhancing business education by means of a practical curriculum envisioning five employment fields, as well as specialized seminars and medium-term study-abroad programs.

Modern English language courses aim to turn out large numbers of people capable of playing an active part in global society. This is not limited only to certain fields or industries-in every setting and in every situation, there is no substitute for making full use of the English language that you have learned in order to cultivate your ability to think for yourself and express your own ideas. It is for this reason that the curriculum of this department makes use of lectures, lessons and on-site practice which envision actual work carried out in the five employment fields mentioned above. By narrowing down the focus of the curriculum to those areas in which students have expressed the most interest, we have been able to realize the training program known as "ESP," which allows students to engage in practical, specific and easy-to-understand English study. English language skills sought after by society are brought into clear focus through a program integrating "IEP," which fosters English language ability through the comprehensive fundamental skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. A special feature of our department is that lecturers include professionals from a variety of different fields, including hospitality, mass media and interpreting, all of whom contribute towards allowing students to acquire practical knowledge and skills. We also place a premium upon education conducted in a seminar format with small class sizes. In the basic seminars in the second year of study and the specialized seminars in the third and fourth years of the program, the students themselves develop an awareness of their own future progress, consider what and how they would like to learn, and then select their own themes and courses, thus forming a system which encourages independence. Medium-term study-abroad programs (internship study-abroad programs) are also in place to provide opportunities for students to learn problem-solving skills. Unlike conventional foreign language study-abroad programs, students use English while obtaining working experiences in-country, in which way students are able to overcome a variety of obstacles and boost their self-confidence.

Graduates of our department are active in a wide range of fields, from flight attendants to working at foreign communications companies and in the overseas trading departments of manufacturing firms.
