Department of British and American Studies

People who have language skills armed with deep knowledge and expertise will be a driving force in international society.

We now live in a society without borders as people, information and financial resources rapidly move around the world. English is indispensable in all fields and industries, as English has become the official language of international institutions, business and trading, and the main language of communication in the areas of science and technology. Society now has a ceaseless need for global human resources with not only a good command of the English language, but with the ability to find the appropriate solutions to problems in business and in the international arena. Everything you need in order to get there is concentrated into the four-year program in the Department of British and American Studies.

People who have language skills as well as the ability to think critically with broad knowledge is what lies beneath a strong power of persuasion.

Language is a tool to promote mutual understanding and the improvement of language skills is not the final objective. Through structured and logical thinking, developing the ability to obtain deep knowledge and expertise is one of the keys to success in international society. It is no exaggeration to say that for students to reach such a level is the objective for studying in the Department of British and American Studies.

One of the characteristics of the department are small classes, divided by proficiency level, along with specialized seminars and individual guidance, which allow students to build comprehensive language skills which enable them to think, discuss, and give presentations in English while capturing the essence of the topics they study.

Satisfaction with the language skills gained through a world-class English education system and study abroad programs is not the only aim. It is also important to gain real knowledge and expertise from the world and to be able to think critically. With the essential communication skills cultivated through deep learning as a basis, we want our students to display their talents on the world stage.

Introduction of Majors

「The Department has two majors: the English Language Major and the English Communication Major

The Department of British and American Studies has decided to put more focus on liberal arts education at the international level and has two majors: the English Language Major and the English Communication Major. In terms of improving one’s English, there is no significant difference between the English Language Major, which has strongly inherited the previous Department of British and American Studies, and the English Communication Major, which focuses on the improvement of communication skills. However, the department will be transformed into a department where students are able to choose their major based on their own preference and to concentrate on their interest of study.

The English Language Major

In the English Language Major, students will learn the structure of the English language by exploring multiple aspects of the language and culture of Britain and the United States, while aiming to develop an understanding of cultures and societies focusing on North America, Britain and Oceania.
