Department of English and Contemporary Society

Understanding and learning English as the common world language while looking at various phenomena taking place in modern society
English is a language spoken all over the world today. There are native English speakers and English speaking countries while there are non-native English speakers in countries where one of their official languages is English. In this context, the Department of English and Contemporary Society regards English as a common language in the world and we believe that learning the English language while looking at various phenomena happening in modern society will lead to learning a high level of English that can be used in the global society. By learning English one step ahead of the others, students will learn how English can be used in any circumstance, and to achieve this, we offer education for the purpose of students gaining a high level of English that can be utilized regardless of occupation.

Fostering human resources armed with the ability to think in English and who can take an active role on the front line of the globalized society

The department provides students opportunities to learn “real English” using various fields of expertise as the subject material. We foster high English language proficiency through the comprehensive fundamental skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking through various educational methods including interpretation and translation. Furthermore, we also have courses in which students can learn English expressions used in specific professions, including aviation, medical care, nursing, media, law, and business. Because we consider English as a common language in the world, we have widely expanded the subject of learning, not only focusing on Britain and the United States, but also other Englishes and non-English speaking countries. In addition to developing a high level of English, students will acquire the following: the ability to communicate globally, namely global literacy; a high English language proficiency; a broad knowledge they will acquire through the process of studying English; and the ability to think logically. Through this education, we foster global human resources who can take an active role in global corporations and international organizations in addition to the aviation, tourism, and hotel industries.

Overseas training for all students

QUEST is an overseas training program established in the Department of English and Contemporary Society, in which all first-year students undergo language training in the United Kingdom or Ireland for about one month in August. Not only will they learn proper English and gain the experience of giving a presentation about Japanese culture, but also students will become more motivated to study English by going abroad at an early stage of their university studies. The expenses will be fully covered depending on the student's TOEFL score.
