With a focus on the world, this department offers wide-ranging education on Japan and the world to develop human resources who can bring global knowledge back to Japan

“World liberal arts” refers to “glocal” (global and local) liberal arts from the standpoint of the world’s diverse, multicultural qualities. This wisdom is needed to thrive in the global era, and can also be called “next-generation liberal arts.” To that end, the Department of World Liberal Arts focuses on the world while teaching a broad range of liberal arts, including the languages, cultures, histories, and societies of Japan and other regions across the globe, thereby developing human resources who can bring global knowledge back to Japan. Students cultivate abundant human sensibilities, empathy, critical thinking, and an international mindset, gaining the ability to facilitate communication between the world and people in regional communities, and to contribute to peaceful development for both.

Founded on English (the global language), the Department of World Liberal Arts enhances students’ high-level proficiency in English and other languages through the English Fundamental Program, Major Language Program, and Minor Multilingual Program. Students gain fundamental and specialized knowledge about the cultures, societies, economies, and histories of regions across the world—as well as the ability to bring these back to Japan—through comprehensive studies to become global human resources with the skills to be active in any country or generation in the Global Liberal Arts Program (Introductory/ Practical), Global Liberal Arts Bridge Course, and classes in the World Studies Course and Global Studies Course.

This course comprehensively teaches about global cultures, literature, fine arts, and other subjects with a focus on the world’s diversity and local qualities. Specifically, students learn about liberal arts in the cultural field (such as global art, music, film, and media) across different regions and eras.

This course comprehensively teaches about humans, societies, civilizations, and other topics with a focus on transboundary qualities on the global stage. Specifically, students learn a wide range of liberal arts and cultivate their critical thinking skills based on the themes of humans and society, politics and economies, natural environment, religion, gender, etc.
